27 Chess Players from Stellenbosch Schools took part in the 2017 National Team Championships which were held at Birchwood in Boksburg at the beginning of January 2018.

Our stars were:

• Caleb Samuel as part of the WP U20A Team that won Silver.
• Nathan Amsterdam in the WP U20B Team that won Gold.  Nathan also won a board prize.
• In the WP U18A Team that won Silver, Andrew Flores Bartoli (board prize) and Corné Briedenhann.
• The WP U18B Team that won Gold included Laurence Briedenhann and Elize Hoffman.
• Karla Brugman’s WP U16 Girls Team won Silver, and the WP U16B Team of which Ilse Brugman was part, won Silver.
•  In the WP U16C Team that won Gold there were 2 board prizes for Dawid Nieuwoudt and Christa Davids, and the team also included Genevieve Pietersen.
• Alexander van der Merwe won a board prize as part of the WPU14A Team that won Silver.
• In the WP U12A Team that won Silver, Brett Williams also received a board prize.
• Lisa Brugman won a board prize and her WP U12B Team won Bronze.
• Jody Stokes was part of the WP U12 Girls Team that won Silver.
• The Cape Winelands U12A Team included  Gio-Joshua Bantam and Deon Jonkers.
• In the WP U10A Team that won Silver, both Jacobus Geyser and Cronan Willis won a board prize.
• Earl Erasmus and Christof Bester starred in the WP U10B Team that won Silver.
• The WP U10C Team included 5 Stellenbosch players – Leathon Geldenhuys, Steyn de Vos, Aleza Roos, Kelly Swarts, and Mila Bester
• Last, but not least,  in the WP U8A Team, Noreht Nieuwoudt.

Some other junior players who are members of the Stellenbosch Chess Club (but not in School in Stellenbosch) also took part in the SAJCC.  They were:

• Zander Bezuidenhout in the WP U18C Team that won a Gold.  He won a board prize too.
• In the WP U14A Team that took Silver, Phillip Coetzee.
• Migael van Schaik in the WP U12A Team that won Silver.
• His younger sister, Kayla van Schaik, played for the WP U8A team.
