Condolences: Mr Eldo Smart

The following message was sent to Chess SA by Stellenbosch Chess Club:

“CONDOLENCES: MR ELDO SMART

On 9 June 2017, after a stormy week in the Western Cape, we all woke up to the sad news that Mr Eldo Smart, the President of SA Chess, passed away the previous day.  It was as if nature wanted to prepare us for the loss of the leader of the South African Chess community.  The news was greeted with disbelief and shock by all in the Chess Community.

The huge role he played in the Chess Community of the Western Cape is clear from the press release and the homage by Adv Lyndon Bouah.  He served Chess with passion, commitment and humility.

As the Stellenbosch Chess Club we owe him the gratitude of attending and participating in the closing ceremony of the first Paul Roos Chess Tournament earlier this year.  We hope that this tournament will be an enduring monument to his legacy as President of SA Chess in Stellenbosch.

The Stellenbosch Chess Club wishes to express our condolences to the Smart family, Chess SA, the Belhar Chess Club and Chess Community in the Western Cape as a whole with the untimely passing of Mr Eldo Smart.”

Please note the following arrangements:

Afrika Chess Club Open

The Afrika Chess club hosted their Open at Ihlumelo High School in Mbekweni on the 10th of June 2016.

Due to the inclement weather (cold and rain, for which we are all thankful), the organizers decided to have the junior players play all 7 their rounds on the Saturday.

The Open Section was won by Athon Willenberg after a tough 5 rounds on one day.

Here are some photo’s of the Juniors, with thanks to Candice Lange for sharing some of her photo’s.  Apologies for the eye glare on some pics – it was due to the flash on phone camera.
